Discourse Markers
Words, phrases, or clauses that assist in the structure of written or spoken work.
Adjuncts
Senctions of phrases that tend to be reduced or removed entirely. E.g. “I’ll do it instead”, the word ‘will’ was removed.
Disjuncts
Assists people in expressing an opinion towards something.
Anaphoric Reference
Referring to something in a text that was previously identified, typically when the audience already knows who the subject is. ‘she’ ‘he’ ‘it’
Cataphoric Reference
Referring to something that hasn’t been revealed to the audience yet.
Exophoric Reference
Referring to concepts the reader can’t do while reading e.g. “Don’t go over there.”
Interdiscursivity
Using Discourses from one field in another unrelated field. E.g. science discourse in advertisements for toys.
Critical Discourse Analysis
Analyzing other views and ideologies, and arguing for or against the texts.
Narrative Structures
The order of events that took place when retelling a story.
