Noun
A word class to identify objects, people or things, as well as consepsts.
Artical
Used to modify nouns. E.g ‘the’ and ‘a’
Verb
Word class that depicts an action.
Adjective
Word class that describes a noun.
Adverb
Word class that describes the verb.
Minor sentences/ellipsis
A word is missed out of a sentence/ incomplete.
Concrete noun
A physical object.
Abstract noun
A idea, quality or state
Proper Noun
Place and person, nouns spelled with a capital letter.
Collective noun
Denote a group of individuals.
Standard English
Form of English widely ‘accepted’ as the correct form.
Non Standard English
Not conforming to the ‘accepted’ form of English.
Contractions
Abbreviated words.
Modifiers
An umbrella term for adjectives and adverbs.
Intensifies
Adverbs of high and low degrees. E.g very good
Simple sentence
Independent clause.
Compound sentence
Two main clauses joined by a conjunction.
Complex Sentence
Inderpendent clause joined by a dependent joined by a clause.
Interragotive Sentence
Question.
Imperative Sentence
Command sentence.
Exclamative sentence
Expressing strong feelings.
Declarative Sentence
Stating a fact.
Copula verb
Linking verbs that join subjects with an adjective or noun. E.g Is, Am, Are and Was.
Preposition
Placed in front of nouns, describes the relationship between the noun and the other words.
Infinitive
Basic form of the verb, without an inderpendent partial. ‘To infront’ ‘to eat’ ‘to sleep’.
Morpheme
Lowest unit of language that can convey meaning. They are words that cannot be separated.
Grapheme
The smallest unit of writing that can change the meaning of a word. This can be a letter or a group of letters, that represent a single phonem. E.g ‘ing’ ‘dis’ ‘un’.
Diminutive
A version of a noun that refers to a small version of something. E.g “Dog” becomes “doggie”
Genitive pronoun
Linguistical term for possive pronouns. E.g my, mine, his, ours and theirs.
Non Standard grammar
Use of grammatical features which are not considered to be ‘correct’.
Conditional clauses
Hypothetical or state a condition. E.g a sentence starting with ‘if’.
Mitigated imperative
A syntactically disguised imperative. E.g could be mitigated via conditional clauses or tentative language.
Modal auxiliary verb
Verbs that indicate possibility, capability, necessity or willingness to change form. E.g. Can, Could, May, Might, Must, Ought, Should, Show, Shall, will and Would.
Tag questions
String of words normally added to a declarative sentence.
Antecedent Nouns
Word that pronouns refer to. E.g. “He worked all day; John was tired”.
Anaphora
Repetition of words or phrases at beginning of a successive clause.
Anadiplosis
Repetition of words or phrases at the end of a successive clause.
Syntactic paraleism
Repetition in adjacent clauses and sentences.
Polysyndeton
Using of Conjunctions. E.g and, but
Asydeton
Not using conjunctions.
Compound nouns
A noun made up of two or more words.
