Discourse Markers
Phrase or word use to organise the discourse. E.g First, Next
Adjacency Pairs
A unit of conversation. E.g a=”How are you?” B=”Good thanks. What about you?”
Quotives
Often used in oral story telling. E.g ‘I said’…‘he said’…
Exposition
Story opening. E.g once apon a time
Anaphoric reference
Reference to somthing previously identified in the text
Cataphoric reference
Making a reference to somthing not yet identified in the text.
Intediscursivity
Use of discourse from one field as part of another. E.g using science to sell beauty products.
Cohesive Devices
A type of discourse marker to signal chronology.
Valediction
Saying goodbye.
Phatic Tokens
Small talk that can be broken into 3 parts. Self-oriented, other-oriented and neutral-oriented.
Deistic terms
Context dependent words referring back/forward or outside the text.
False start
The speaker begins an utterance, than stops and either repeats or reformulates it (False start).
Enumeration
Form of discourse marking that individuals listing.
Dialogic
Exchange of adjanency pairs.
Monologic
One person writing/speaking at length.
