A clause that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence, and adds meaning to a main clause.
Subordinate clause
A clause that can stand by itself as a simple sentence. It contains a subject and predicate.
Independent clause
When an action performed by the subject is expressed by the verb.
Active voice
When the subject of the sentence is acted on by the verb.
Passive voice
Each of two or more parts of a sentence, often joined by and, or, but, etc., that make separate statements that each have equal importance.
Co-ordinating clause
A verb with another word that further illustrates the verb tense, action, and tone.
Verb phrase
Words or phrases which add some extra information, placed at the front of the sentence.
Fronted adverbial
A word to which affixes (prefixes and suffixes) are added to.
Root
The way words are arranged in such units as phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Syntax
A letter or a group of letters that are added to the end of a word to make a new word, often of a different word class.
Suffix
