A warning or indication eluding to a future event.
Foreshadow
Narration that is understood because of something outside a text or conversation.
Exophoric narrative
Narration relating to the narrator who is also the protagonist or other character in the work.
Homodiegetic
a word or phrase whose function is to organize discourse in natural communication into segments.
Discourse marker
The final part of a narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved.
Denouement
a comprehensive description and explanation of an introduction or information regarding the narrative.
Exposition
A word in a text refers to another later in the text and you need to look forward to understand.
Cataphoric reference
The effect of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect.
Juxtaposition
A shift in a narrative’s overall feeling or atmosphere from where it started.
Tonal shift
A literary device used to draw attention to a specific part of a poem, novel, short story, or other literary work.
