Gram Positive Bacteria (Clostridium) Flashcards
Clostridium shape?
Rods
2 facts about clostridium
Anerobic and spore producer
Why is it advantageous to be a spore producer?
Allows baterium to survive adverse conditions such as temp, radiation, chemicals, and air exposure.
When conditions are favourable again bacteria will germinate.
Clostridium causes which two infections?
Clostridium perfringens and clostridium difficile.
What does Clostridium perfringen result in?
GAS gangrene
What is GAS gangrene?
Localised death and decomposition of body tissue
GAS gangrene / clostridium perfringen symptoms
Foul discharge and pain
Clostridium perfringens / GAS gangrene treatments
Debridement essential
Antibiotic associated diarrhoea AKA
Clostridium difficile
C. diff gut commensal

Who has is most likely to suffer from c.diff
over 65’s (80%) and people who take lots of abx
SIGHT?
Suspect, isolate, gloves & apron, hand washing and test
what is toxic mega colon?
Toxic dilation of colon
What abx increase the risk of C.diff?
Cephalosporins, clindamycin and ciprofloxacin.
