Gram positive anaerobic cocci Flashcards
What is Peptostreptococcus species weak to?
○ Beta-lactam antibiotics
○ Penicillin G being the most effective
Penicillin G
○ first generation penicillin that is used to treat infections
○ Administered as an IV
Peptostreptococcus anaerobius
○ Causes infections in the brain, ear, jaw, pleural cavity, and urogenital tract
○ Small grey to white colonies that have a sweet but putrid odor on ANBAP
Parvimonas micra
Causes infection such as brain abscesses, otitis media, human bite infections, septicemia, abdominal infections and prosthetic joint infections
Peptinophilus asaccharolyticus
○ ANBAP small yellow colonies
○ SPS resistant
○ catalase (-)
○ indole (+)
Anaerococcus tetradus
Normal flora of the female genital tract
Finegoldia magna
○ Causes infections with skin and soft tissues, endocarditis, meningitis, pneumonia, breast abscesses and bone infection
○ Small greyish colonies on ANBAP
○ Gram stain shows GPC in clusters
○ Can be confused with Staphylococcus species
Cefinase disk test results
○ Pink= positive
○ No color change= negative
Cefinase testing
○ βlactamase or cephalosporinase testing
○ Done with a Cefinase disk
What species can produce Beta-lactamase?
○ Bacteroides fragilis group
○ Clostridium
○ Fusobacterium
