What are gender roles
The different roles; behaviour and activities that society thinks are appropriate or right for women and men
Explain power inequality
- Some people have more rights; power and better opportunities than other people
- Unfair and may lead to power struggles
- Affect a person negatively ( eg. some cultures girls = no education)
Name the different abuses of power
- Individ. = Physical abuse
- Family = incest
- Cultural = Mourning period
- Social = domestic violence
- Social = Sexual violence and rape
Explain the different abuses of power
1) Using physical force to cause harm; injury; disability or death
2) Sexual intercourse between people who are so closely related that they would not be allowed to get married by law
3) Many cultures have religious rituals; traditions or behaviours for the mourning period.
- These rules dictate the mourning period; dress code and behaviour and are strictly enforced for widows
4) Happens when 1 person in a close relationship/ marriage tries to dominate and control the other person
- Uses fear; guilt; shame; threats
5) Any sexual act that is unwanted by the other person
- Incls : Being forced to watch people performing sexual acts; penetration with fingers; date rape; gang rape; being forced to perform anal/ oral sex
Explain sexual harassment
- Unwanted sexual behaviour that happens again and again
eg : sexual comments; whisting; asking about a persons sex life; name - calling; sex related jokes; showing pornographic images; rude gestures
Describe the negative effects on health and well-being of gender roles
Emotional :
- Fear of the abuser
- Anger
- Depression
- Avoiding friends
- Dropping out of school
- Feeling worthless and powerless
- Shame
- Alcohol and substance abuse
Physical :
- Bruises
- Death
-Burn wounds
- Rope or strap marks
- Broken bones or teeth
- Unwanted pregnancies
How can you contribute to a harmonious society
- Promote harmony; peace and tolerance
- Providing moral codes to live by
- Encourage people to learn about their own and others belief systems
- Give people a sense of belonging
Help the less fortunate and uplift the community
Explain the Buddist teachings
- Do not steal
- Do not take life ( people and animals)
- Avoid harmful or wrongful sensual activities
- Avoid alcohol and drugs
- Do not indulge in wrong speech
Explain the Christian teachings
- Follow the ethical teachings as given in the 10 commandments
- They love God and care for each other
- Follow the teachings of Jesus Christ
Explain the African Traditional Religion teachings
- No holy book
- Should help the needy
-Should show respect to others - Should tell the truth; be hardworking; honest and generous
- Must show hospitality to everyone
- Human dignity is valued more than the individ. contribution to society
Explain the Judaism teachings
- Worship no other God
- Do not steal; commit murder; adultery; accuse anyone falsely; desire another mans property
- Do not use Gods name wrongly
- Honour your father and mother
- Do not bow down to any idol or worship it
Explain the Islam teachings
- Care for all members of their family
- Understand that all people are equal
- Fast during Ramadaan to realise what its like to be hungry
- Expected to marry
- Sex outside marriage is forbidden
- Must give generously to the poor
- Women must dress modestly and cover their hair and bodies
- Forbidden to eat pork
Why is religion important
- Religious beliefs give meaning to life
-Answer peoples questions about themselves and the world they live in - Brings people together and gives them a sense of belonging ( feel part of a community)
- Used by different societies to explain events that happen in peoples lives
- Gives its followers a sense of security in life ( they know who they are; what their place in society and in that religion is)
Explain euthanasia
- The act / practice of killing someone who is very sick or injured to prevent more suffering
Explain cultural practices and traditions
- Male circumcision : part of initiation rites of some cultures
- Polygamy : more than one partner
- Arranged marriages : parents / families decide whom their children will marry
- Rhinoceros horn : traditional Asian medicine
