Q

Explain inhumane farming methods fully

A
  • The process of packing many animals into smaller spaces, slaughtering them using cruel methods and feeding them incorrect or unbalanced diets
    - Done to incr productivity to save labour and other costs

Challenges:
- Factory and battery farming = animals dont get enough space; sunlight; fresh air therefore they live in discomfort and frustration
- Many of the animals are unhealthy to eat as they are diseased and puped full of antibiotics and growth hormones

Solutions:
- Reduce meat intake
- Buy meat and animal products from companies that support humane farming practices
- Investigate other meat alternatives

Q

Explain overfishing fully

A
  • When the stock of fish in a certain body of fish has been depleted due to excessive fishing, usually to keep up with t he growing consumer demand
    - So many fish caught that natural reproduction cant keep up

Occurances:
- Fishing areas are largely unprotected
- Unreported fishing
- Difficulties in regulating fishing areas due to lack of resources and tracking activity
- Problems with lack of knowledge in customs and importation
- Many countries have subsidies for fisherman which keeps their number higher than it needs to be

Challenges:
- Removal of essential predators which means that sea creatures further down the food chain are negatively affected
- Larger amount of smaller marine creatures = greater damage to coral reels and other elements of the oceans ecosystem
- number of fishes caught but not all used for food ( eg dolphins; turtles)
- Great threat to communities who depend on fish as primary source of food

Solutions:
- Educate retailers on ways to purchase their seafood from sustainable fisheries so that they dont make the problem worse
- Set up more protected areas in the ocean in an effort to help reduce the effects of overfishing on reefs and marine structures
- Work with governments to create better regulations and specific policy so policies are up to date and helpful
