Give 3 complaints in a history of balanitis
A
- Penile soreness and itch
- Bleeding from foreslin and/or odour
- Dysuria and/or dyspareunia

Give 3 examination findings in balanitis
A
- Redness and swelling of glans penis (and often the foreskin) with exudate.
- Inability to retract foreskin (phimosis)
- Tightening of foreskin or meatal stenosis (narrowing of urethral opening)

Define balanoposthitis
A
Inflammation of glans penis and foreskin

Give causes of balanitis
A
- Non specific dermatitis
- Fungal, bacterial and viral infections
- STIs
- Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis

How is balanitis caused by non-specific dermatitis managed?
A
- Clean area daily with warm water and avoid iritants
- 1% hydrocortisone cream up to 14 days
- Imidazole cream

How is bacterial blanaitis in a child managed ?
A
- Oral flucolaxacillin for 7 days
- Consider 1& hydrocortisone cream up to 14 days to reduce discomfort

How is candidal balanitis manged in an adult
A
- Imidazole cream up to 14 days
- 150mg oral fluconazole single dose

How is bacterial balanitis managed in an adult
A
- 500mg oral flucolonazole 4 times daily for 7 days
- Consider hydrocortisone cream to reduce discomfort

what should be done if symptoms of balanitis do not improve after 7 days of treatment
A
- Stop hydrocortisone if using
- Take sub-preputial swab to exclude or confirm a fungal or bacterial infection and treat accordingly
