Q

Federal Agencies:
What does the department of labor do?

A

The Department of Labor oversees many aspects of the work environment, including wages, collective bargaining, employment discrimination, and working conditions. One particularly relevant agency of the department is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which seeks to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths either directly or through OSHA-approved state programs.

Because most fire fighters are considered public sector employees, not private employees, they are subject to state programs, not the federal OSHA mandates. However, most state programs closely follow federal OSHA requirements.

Q

Federal Agencies:
what does the Department of health and human services do?

A

The Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.

It includes both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The CDC is an especially important resource on tracking health risks and the prevention of both disease and injury. NIOSH is well-known in the fire service, particularly for its Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program, which has been reviewing line-of-duty deaths in the fire service since 1998 to investigate the causes and formulate recommendations for preventing future deaths and injuries.
