Civil service System

A claim that confidential communications between a president and close advisers should not be revealed without the consent of the president.
Executive Privilege
The president’s constitutional power to turn down acts of Congress.
Veto
A presidential veto of legislation wherein the president takes no formal action on a bill. If Congress adjourns within ten days of passing a bill, and the president does not sign it, the bill is considered to be vetoed.
Pocket Veto
To charge a government official (president or otherwise) with “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors” and bring him or her before congress to determine guilt.
Impeachment
A number of people equal to the number of senators from each state. They cast a ballot 6 weeks after elections to determine the presidency. In all but two states, the candidate with the majority in that state gets all the electoral votes from that state.
Electoral College
The role of the president as head of the executive branch of the government.
Chief Executive (Head of Government)
The role of the president in recognizing foreign governments, making treaties, and effecting executive agreements.
Chief Diplomat
term for the president as architect of public policy and the one who sets the agenda for congress
Chief Legislator
highest representative of a sovereign state
Head of State
president acts as the leader of their political party and supports other governmental candidates who support the same policies
Chief of Party
a presidential document that reveals what the president thinks of a new law and how it ought to be enforced
Signing Statement
