Chemistry 10/11 Flashcards
What happens when you go down a period left to right?
Atom gets larger w/ more protons
What happens when to atoms when you go down a group?
Increase in size, more distance between outermost orbital and nucleus
Define ionization energy
The minimum energy required to remove the most loosely bound electron.
What happens to the ionization energy of atoms as you move from left to right across a period. Explain
Ionization energy increases. The more protons as you go across a period, the more energy it takes to remove an electron from the atom.
What happens to the ionization energy of atoms as you move from top to bottom of a group? Explain
Ionization energy decreases. The more orbitals and electrons, the farther away the outermost electron gets from the nucleus, making it easier to remove an electron from the atom.
Define electronegativity
The ability for the atom to hold electrons tightly to itself.
Properties of metals
Malleable, high melting point, good conductors of electricity, high density, ductile, etc.
Properties of nonmetals
Can be in any form (Solid, liquid and gas), don’t conduct electricity well, aren’t malleable, are not shiny, etc
