what is acute monoarthropathy?
acute arthritis of 1 joint
What is gout?
URIC ACID CRYSTAL DEPOSITION IN JOINTS
causes significant pain from reactive inflammation
hyperuricemia - high uric acid levels
enhanced by obesity & alcohol
what are the symptoms of gout?
- acute inflammation of SINGLE joint
- usually on the great toe
- rapid onset - hours
- NSAIDs to treat
what are the dental aspects of gout?
- avoid aspirin (it interferes with uric acid removal)
- drug treatments may give oral ulceration
what is osteoarthiritis?
- Degenerative joint disease
- affects weight bearing joints (usually hips & knees)
- ITS NOT WEAR & TEAR (cartilage repair dysfunction)
what are symptoms & signs of osteoarthiritis?
Symptoms:
- Pain
- BRIEF morning stiffness
- SLOWLY progressive over years
Signs:
- Radiographs (loss of joint space)
- joint swelling & deformity
what is treatment for osteoarthiritis?
- nothing alters disease progression
- pain improved by (weight loss, increasing supporting muscle strength)
- NSAIDs to reduce inflammation
what are dental aspects of Osteoarthritis?
- Jaw pain & stiffness
- TMJ disorder
- Tooth loss (alveolar bone & PDL impaired)
- poor OHI due to jaw pain so wont brush teeth
