What is Gord?

A

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease is where acid from stomach refluxes through lower oesophageal sphincter and irritates lining of oesophagus.

Hiatus hernia, obesity, smoking, trigger foods e.g. coffee and alcohol, medication (Decreases lower oesophageal sphincter e.g anticholinergics used for urinary incontinence, CCB

Initial Mx for GORD?

A
  • Advice on reduce coffee, weight loss, stop medication
  • PPI reduce gastric acid secretion e.g. lansoprazole
  • Antacids buffering stomach acids e.g. Gavison Advance

Red flags for referral?

A

2ww referral if suspicious of GI cancer, for endoscopy

  • Dysphagia (trouble swallowing)
  • Weight loss
  • Treatment resistant dyspepsia
  • Over 55
