A great leader of Greece who was a great speaker.
Why was Pericles important to Athens?
Because Pericles began Greece’s golden age, restored, and strengthened Greece
What was Pericles’s 3 goals
- Strength democracy
- Expand empire
- Beautify Athens
How did Pericles accomplish his first goal?

- Balanced power between rich and poor, both classes had the opportunity to become leader and be more representative.
- Started to pay officials and hired more of them.
- Built on direct democracy
How did Pericles accomplish his second goal?
Pericles…
- Formed the Delian League with many city-states to provide mutual protection, trade protection, unite, and strength Greece. Treasury was kept in a neutral location.
- Moved treasury to Athens, used it to build a strong Navy, and beautify Athens.
- Took over the Delian League and many other city-states.
How did Pericles accomplish his third goal?
Pericles…
- Used the League’s money to pay pro artists and buy stones like gold, marble and ivory.
- Rebuilt the acropolis with many famous buildings such as the parthenon.
Define: Delian League
A league made up of Greek city-states that protected trade and territory of all the Greek city-states.
Define: Acropolis
A hill or high part of a city were the most important buildings are located.
Define: Parthenon
A place to house a statue of the Greek goddess Athena in Athens.

Who were fighting in the Peloponnesian War?
Athens and the Peloponnesian League (Sparta and most pf the other Greek city-states)
What was Athens’ plan?
- Rely on navy
- Kept everyone inside the city
- Avoid land battles
Why did Athens’s plan fail to keep everyone inside the city?
Because the city was overcrowded, so a plague broke out and killed 1/3 of the population.
What was Sparta’s battle plan?
- Avoid sea battles and do land battles in stead
- To destroy Athens’ countryside, and starve the Athenians
What was the outcome of the Peloponnesian war?
Athens surrendered to Sparta after 25 years

A disease that spreads very easily and kills lots of people.
Define: truce
A contract signed to stop fighting for a period of time.

Important things in the battle of the marathon…
In battle Athens surrounded Persians with clever plan. Then A guy ran 25 miles from marathon to Athens to shout victory.
Important things from the Battle of Thermopylae…
Spartans sacrificed their lives so Athens could be ready to fight when the Persians came.
What was the outcome of the Persian War?
Athenians drove Persians out of Greece and war ended, Greece won
How would today be different if Persia won?
Could be very different. Might not speak the English language, parts of our language comes from greek, or might not have democracy. Customs and culture would more than likely be different.
