Q

How many holy books does Islam have?

A

There are five key books of revelation in Islam. Each of them was given to a different prophet by Allah. Muslims believe that these holy books all conveyed the same message from Allah to the humanity, giving guidance to Muslims on how to live their daily life.

18
Q

What is the most important holy book?

A

The Qu’ran
The Qu’ran is a revealed book because the words in it were given to humans by Allah. The Qu’ran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad when he was meditating in the cave of Hira outside Mecca. Mohammed had a vision of the angel Jibril who told him to read the words on a fiery scroll. Mohammed could not read or write but the words were miraculously revealed to him and he learned them by heart. Over a period of 23 years Muhammad had visions of the Angel Jibril who revealed to him Allah’s message for the whole world. Muhammad remembered the words and recited them to his followers who wrote them down. This is the Quran.

19
Q

What are the other holy books?

A

The Qu’ran names all other holy books shown in Arabic as kutub. These are from Jewish and Christian traditions. In the traditional form Muslims believe that they were true revelations from God. They’re now Believed to be corrupted so unlike the perfect Quran could not be trusted as the true word of God.
They are:
sahifa - the scrolls of Ibrahim - now lost.
Tawrat - the Torah - the revelation given to Musa(moses) (Found in the Jewish and Christian holy books).
Zabur- the Psalms given to Dawud(David) (Found in the Jewish and Christian holy books).
Injil- The Gospel the teaching given to Isa (Jesus) (found in the Christian Holy Book - the Bible).

20
Q

Does the Qu’ran go out of date?

A

Because Allah passed the Quran down to Mohammed in Arabic it should only be read in that language otherwise errors can occur in translation. Muslims believe that the Qu’ran can never go out of date. Allah knows everything that has happened, is happening and will happen so the guidance in the Quran is perfect.

21
Q

Do Muslims use the Qu’ran for guidance?

A

Sunni Muslims may turn to an Iman for guidance. A Sunni Iman leads the prayers in the mosque. He’s the religious leader because he has spent years studying the Quran. Muslims believe that the Quran contains everything that humans will ever need to know about how they should live their lives.
