Angels, Afterlife and predestination Flashcards
What do muslims believe about angels?
Muslims believe Angels are invisible, they exist everywhere, they were the first things to be created, they are immortal,.
* There are four Archangels: Jibril, Mika’il, Israfil, Azrail
What does Jibril do?
- Jibril is the messenger who revealed the Qur’an to Muhammad in the cave.
What does mik’ail do?
- Mika’il is the one who brings rain. He keeps the devil out of heaven and protects the faithful.
What does Azrail do?
- Azrail is the one who collects the souls at death.
What does Israfil do?
- Israfil is the one to announce the day of judgement by blowing his trumpet
What do Munkar and Nakir do?
- Munkar and Nakir are the angels who question each dead person after death
What do Rakib and Atid do?
- Raqib and Atid are the angels who sit on each shoulder, recording a person’s good deed and bad deeds
What do muslims believe about the afterlife?
Muslims believe that everything they do in their life is recorded and will be used as evidence on the day of judgement. On the day of judgement good deeds must outweigh the bad deeds. If you are righteous of paradise the you will cross the bridge of as-Sirat into paradise (Jannah) and the unrighteous will fall off the bridge into Hell (Jahannam). Muslims call this eternal life AKHIRAH.
What will happen on the day of judgement?
Angell Israfil will blow a trumpet to signal the end of the world and then the Angell Azrial will collect the souls of the dead. Each person will be asked three questions by the Angels Munkar and Nakir: who is your Lord? Who is your profit? What is your religion? Angels Raqid and Atib have recorded a persons deeds and their beliefs in a book. If you receive this book in your right hand you go to heaven, if you receive this book in your left hand you go to hell. Some Shia muslims believe that as well as souls being resurrected, a persons physical body shall be too.
What is heaven (Jannah) like?
In the Quran Paradise is described as a beautiful garden with rivers of milk and honey, fruits, flowers and fountains. “Those who believe and do righteous deeds are the best creatures. Their reward is with the Lord- gardens of Eden, underneath which rivers flow, but they shall dwell forever. Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with him. This is for those who fear the Lord.”
What is Hell (Jahannam) like?
Hell is described as a terrifying place of torment. Muslims believe there are 7 layers to hell, each varying in torment and pain. Some Muslims believe that once a person has been purified in hell they will be allowed into paradise.
What do muslims believe about predestination (Al Qadr)?
Sunni believe in both free will and predestination.
Al-Qadr means destiny: One of 6 articles of faith of Sunni Muslims
They believe we have free will: we make our own choices in life. We choose whether to follow God’s laws or not.
We are not puppets, controlled by God. This must exist otherwise humans cannot take responsibility or offer genuine
faith or submission to God. They believe that we have free will but nothing happens without the knowledge and will of
God(insha’ Allah = God willing).
They believe that God, who knows everything, knows what choices we will make. The Qur’an states that God even
knows when a leaf falls from a tree. This must exist otherwise God is not omniscient; is not Al-Amin (the all knowing
one)
