Psychoanalytic
Consciousness-raising: Become more conscious of what is unconscious
§ Increase awareness of and insight into internal conflict and it’s sources
§ Decrease us of immature defense mechanisms
§ Increase use of more mature expressions of our impulses
Increase ego strength
Person-Centered
○ Increase congruence
§ Increased acceptance of self and others
§ Increased openness to present-moment experiencing and expression of emotions

Gestalt
- Increase healthy contact between self, others, and environment

Behavioral
Decrease or extinguish undesirable/maladaptive/negative behaviors and introduce and reinforce more desirable/adaptive/positive behaviors through the use of conditioning and learning.
Cognitive
○ Improve the client’s ability to identify, challenge, and modify their thoughts so their thinking becomes more rational, flexible, and self-enhancing
§ Improve ability to identify cognitive distortions/irrational beliefs
§ Improve ability to test and to refute their thoughts from a more objective and logical perspective
§ Improve ability to replace problematic thoughts with more adaptive thoughts that promote client’s wellbeing
ACT
Systemic
Develop relational patterns that promote more flexible interaction and behavior.
Restructure interactions, modify/soften/expand family rules.
Create more flexibility in family roles.
Increase clear boundaries between all subsystems that allow for intimacy and individuation.
Establish more effective parent-child hierarchy.
Increase differentiation of self.
Improve system’s ability to make the necessary adjustments appropriate to their stage in the family life cycle.
