Gnral views about animals Flashcards
whats benthams view
Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure
Bentham argued that animals are capeable of feeling pleasure and pain and therefore his principle would extend to animals
peter singer animals
Animals can be considered ‘persons’.
This is not the same as saying they are people.
Philosopher Peter Singer said animals qualify as persons because they can feel pain, they have social relationships, they have emotional lives etc..
So this means they deserve rights.
Quote against use of animals as food Gary francione
It’s our statement that we reject the notion that animals are things and we regard them as sentient non human as moral persons with the fundamental right not to be treated as property or resource of food
Cesar Chavez
I became vegetarian after realising the animals feel afraid cold hungry and unhappy like we do
What is to Tom regans argument
At least some kinds of non humans animals have moral rights because they are a “subject of a life”and rights adhere to them whether they recognise them or not
Regans position and it’s link to kantian ethics
Regans position is kantian although Kant himself did not apply it to animals namely that all subjects of a life possess inherent value and must be treated as an end in themselves not as a mean to an end . He also argues rear while being the subject of a life is a sufficient condition for having intrinsic value it’s not a necessary one an individual may not be a subject of a life and still possess intrinsic value
Charles Darwin theory of evolution
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution has challenged long standing religious beliefs humans are not distinct or unique part of gods creation imago day rises from the sixth day of creation throughout history this has given rise to the belief that humans have absolute importance over any other of gods creations
