GMOs Flashcards
GM technology allows the transfer of genes between different species
:)
GM plants
Improve cultivation by pest and herbicide resistance.
Some have been modified to improve human health. For eg golden rice & the banana which acts as a vaccine for hepatitis B.
GM Plants
Modified for improved growth rate or to produce specific substances in milk, eggs or blood.
For eg the production of human proteins in cow’s milk
Social implications
Large production which leads to cheaper prices
Ethical implications
Farmers cant keep the seed for sowing the following crop - does not suit small farmers in developing countries
can lead to super weeds
GMO crops require more herbicides and just as much pesticides as normal crops.
Environmental implications
disease resistance among plants
creation of enviropigs who need les phosphorous
medical implication
production of human proteins for medical use - insulin, human g hormone etc.
prevent transmission if bird flu by chickens
GMOs
These are Transgenic organisms- that is they have one or more foreign genes that are expressed. Promotor sequences of DNA have been inserted alongside the gene so that it can be expressed in the host organism.
