play someone off against (someone else)
挑拨离间, to scheme in a manner that pits two of your adversaries against one another.
e.g. The president played the House off against the Senate and ended up getting his own way.
a long face
if you have a long face, you look sad
e.g. ‘Why’ve you got such a long face?’ ‘My boyfriend doesn’t want to see me any more.’
from without
from the outside
e.g. The door suddenly opened from without, almost throwing me to the ground.
as it were (so)
可以说, so to speak; sort of; in a way; to indicate a word or a statement is not exactly correct
e. g. God brought them out of Egypt; he has as it were the strength of an unicorn.
e. g. If he still refuses we could always apply a little pressure, as it were.
penny-pinching
unwilling to spend or share money; miserly; mean.
