Glycolysis Flashcards
Glycolysis
Breakdown of Glucose; 10 step linear pathway, in cytoplasm; 1 glucose->2 pyruvates +2 atp +2 NADH
Steps 1-5
break 1 glucose into 2 glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate fragments - requires 2 atp
Steps 6-10
occurs twice for each glucose; produce 2 pyruvate, 4 atp, 2 nadh/h+
Controlled at steps ___, ___, ___
1, 3, 10
Step 3 main control
atp, citrate negative effectors for phosphofuctokinase, ADP AMP positive effectors, turned off when high in atp and citrate
Step 1
Catalyzed by hexokinase, glucose 6-phosphate as negative effector, concentration of glucose 6-phosphate can rise from inhibition of step 3, manufacture of glucose, breakdown of glycogen
Step 10
Catalyzed by pyruvate kinase; atp, fructose, 1,6-biphosphate and alanine as negative effectors, 1,6-biphosphate is reactant in step 4
Anaerobic conditions lead to
lactate formation
Aerobic conditions lead to
Acetyl-CoA formation
Conversion of glucose to lactate under anaerobic conditions is
spontaneous; energy released as heat
