Gluteal Region Muscles Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
O: illium posterior to posterior gluteal line, dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament
I: IT tract which inserts on the lateral condyle of the tibia, and gluteal tuberosity of the femur
N: inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
A: extend hip joint between flexed and standing positions and assists in its rotation, steadies thigh and assists in rising from sitting.
Gluteus Medius
O: external surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
I: lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
N: superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
A: abducts and anterior portions medially rotate the hip joint, keeps pelvis level when opposite limb is elevated
Gluteus Minimus
O: external surface of the ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
I: anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur
N: superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
A: abducts and anterior portions medially rotate the hip joint, keeps pelvis level when the opposite limb is elevated
Tensor Fasciae Latae
O: ASIS, and anterior part of iliac crest
I: IT tract which attaches to the lateral condyle of the tibia
N: superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
A: flexes hip joint, acts with gluteus maximus to stabilize extended knee
Gemelli (superior and inferior)
O: superior: ischial spine
Inferior: ischial tuberosity
I: medial surface of greater trochanter of the femur (trochanteric fossa)
N: superior: nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
inferior: nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
A: laterally rotate extended hip joint and abduct, also steady hip joint
Quadratus Femoris
O: lateral border of ischial tuberosity
I: quadrate tubercle on intertrochantetic crest of femur and area inferior to it
N: nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
A: laterally rotate the hip joint, also pulls femoral head into acetabulum to stabilize the hip joint and pelvis
