Gluteal Region And Posterior Thigh Flashcards
What are the 3 bones which make up the pelvic girdle?
The ilium, ischium and pubis.
They all unite to form the acetabulum.
How are the ilium, pubis, ischium connected?
Pubic symphysis. (At the front). Posteriorly at the sacrum.
What is the role of the gluteal region muscles?
The superficial abduct and extend and the deep laterally rotate the femur at the hip joint.
What are the 3 superficial muscles?

- Main extensor of the thigh
- Assists with lateral rotation
- Used when force is required such as: running/climbing
Gluteus Medius and minimums
Abducts and medically rotates thigh
Stabilises pelvis during walking, preventing pelvis drop on the opposite limb.
What are the innervation and blood supply of gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and minimums.
The gluteus maximus= inferior gluteal nerve and artery
Gluteus medius and gluteus minimums=
Superior gluteal nerve and artery.
What are the five deep muscles of the thigh?
Piriformis Gemellus Superior Obturator internus Gemellus Inferior Quadratus femoris
