gluteal region and hip joint Flashcards
differences between male and female pelvis
m = narrow pelvic inlet, heart shaped, taller pelvic cavity, higher iliac crest, pelvic angle = 60 degrees, longer sacrum
F = wider pelvic inlet, pelvic angle = 90 degrees, shorter sacrum
what is the pubic symphysis
a secondary cartilaginous joint between pubic bones
articular surfaces covers by layer of hyaline cartilage connected by FIBROCARTILAGINOUS disc
functions of the pelvis
contain and support bladder, rectum, anal canal, reproductive tracts
bear upper body weight - transfer between sitting and standing
attachment for lower limbs
what strenghens the pelvic girdle
ligaments attaching sacrum to ischium of innominate bone
where does the sacrotuberous ligament insert
ischial tuberosity
where does the sacrospinous ligament insert
ischial spine
what makes the hip joint
acetabulum of innominate bone articulating with head of the femur
movements possible at hip joint
flexion, extension, lateral and medial rotation, adduction and abduction
what ligaments help stabilse the hip joint
iliofemoral - anterior to joint
pubofemoral - anteroinferior to joint
ischiofemoral - posterior to joint
Gluteus Maximus - O, I, I, A
o - surface ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line and posterior inferior surface of sacrum and coccyx
i - posterior aspect of iliofibial tract of LATA, gluteal tuberosity of proximal femur
i - inferior gluteal nerve L5, S1, S2
a - extensor of femur @ hip joint laterally rotates/abducts thigh
Gluteus medius - O, I, I, A
o - external ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
i - elongated facet of lateral surface of greater trochanter
i- superior gluteal nerve L4, L5, S1
a - abduct femur medial rotates hold pelvis secure on stance leg
gluteus minimus - O, I, I, A
o - ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines,
i- linear facets an anteroom-lateral surface of greater trochanter
i - superior gluteal nerve L4,L5,S1
a - abduct femur medially rotate, hold pelvis in place on stance leg
Iliotibial tract function and route
Thickening of Fascia Lata running from tubercle on iliac crest –> bony attachment below knee
Enclose gluteus maximus posteriorly, tensor fasciae latae anteriorly
Hold leg in extension once all other have been extended to prevent lateral displacement of femur
what are the chief abductors of the hip
gluteus medius and minimus
Piriformis - attachments
o - anterior surface of sacrum, between anterior sacral foramina
i -medial surface of superior border of greater trochanter of femur
exits the pelvis through GREATER SCIATIC FORAMEN
