Gluteal Muscles Flashcards
Origin of Gluteus Maximus
Posterior ilium, posterior superior iliac crest, posterior inferior aspect of sacrum and coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion of Gluteus Maximus
fascia lata at the iliotibial band; also into the gluteal tuberosity
Action of Gluteus Maximus
Major extensor of hip joint, assists in laterally rotating the thigh; abducts thigh
Innervation of Gluteus Maximus
Inferior gluteal nerve (L5,S1,S2)
Origin of Gluteus Medius
Dorsal ilium inferior to iliac crest
Insertion of Gluteus Medius
Lateral and superior surfaces of greater trochanter
Action of Gluteus Medius
Major abductor of thigh; anterior fibres help to rotate hip medially; posterior fibres help to rotate hip laterally
Innervation of Gluteus Medius and Minimus
Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Origin of Gluteus Minimus
Dorsal ilium between inferior and anterior gluteal lines.
Insertion of Gluteus Minimus
Anterior surface of greater trochanter
Action of Gluteus Minimus
Abducts and medially rotates the hip joint
Origin of Piriformis
Lateral Sacrum
Insertion of Piriformis
Superior greater trochanter
Action of Piriformis
Lateral rotator of the hip joint
Innervation of Piriformis
Nerve to Piriformis nerve (S1, S2)
