ORIGIN-posterior gluteal line and posterior region behind
outer slope of dorsal segment of iliac crest
dorsal lower sacrum
sacrotuberous ligament
aponeurosis of erector spinae
side of coccyx
INSERTION- deep fibres of lower part- gluteal tuberosity
greater part- iliotibial tract
innervation- Inferior gluteal nerve
ACTION- extends hip and abductor of thigh
lateral rotation
stabilises knee through iliotibial tract
GLUTEUS MEDIUS
ORIGIN- Gluteal surface of ilium between posterior and anterior gluteal lines
INNERVATION- superior gluteal line
INSERTION- oblique ridge on lateral surface of greater trochanter
Action- Abductor of thigh
medial rotator
Maintain balance when opp. foot is above ground by preventing pelvis from tilting
Structure beneath gluteus medius
- Superior gluteal nerve
- Deep branch of superior gluteal artery
- gluteus minimus
- trochanteric bursa of gluteus medius
