INTRODUCTION
chief artery of upper limb
original axis artery- inferior gluteal artery
ORIGIN
continuation of external iliac artery
from midinguinal region behind inguinal ligament
RELATIONS
anterior- skin, superficial fascia,deep fascia and anterior wall of femoral sheath
POSTERIOR-psoas major, pectineus and adductor longus
LATERAL- femoral nerve(upper) and its branches(lower)
MEDIAL- femoral vein which crosses and is posterior in the apex and lateral in the lower end
BRANCHES
3 superficial and 3 deep
SUPERFICIAL-
1. superficial external epigastric artery(skin and fascia of lower anterior abdomen)
2.superficial external pudendal artery(skin of external genital organs)
3.superficial circumflex iliac-( skin along iliac crest)
DEEP
1. profundus femoris
2.deep external pudendal-external genital organs
3.muscular branches
COURSE
downwards and medially first through femoral triangle then adductor canal and passes through opening in adductor magnus to the popliteal fossa to continue as popliteal artery
