Gluconeogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
What is gluconeogenesis?
A
Synthesis of glucose from non carbohydrate precursors
2
Q
When does gluconeogenesis take place?
A
Exercise - lactate;
Short term fasting - alanine;
Diabetes - insulin resistance;
Trauma - peripheral insulin resistance;
3
Q
Glucose requirements
A
Brain and RBC require glucose as fuel;
Daily glucose requirement - 160g;
Glycogen stores - 190g;
Glycogen stores hav enough glucose to last a day;
4
Q
Non carbohydrate precursors
A
Amino acids (alanine);
Glycerol (triacylglycerol);
Lactate;
5
Q
In which tissues does gluconeogenesis take place? And where in the tissue?
A
Liver;
Kidney;
Small intestine;
Cytosol;
6
Q
How does gluconeogenesis take place?
A
Reversal of glycolysis except 3 steps
