Primary use

A

Addisons disease: primary adrenal insufficiency AEB bronzed skin
Long term steroid use: Secondary adrenal insufficiency
Asthma, COPD
UC, Chron’s

Considerations

A

4-10 days max unless Addison disease, then it’s life (prevents secondary adrenal insufficiency)
Encourage vitamin D
Don’t skip a dose
Take 6-9 am. That’s when cortisol is normally made.

Side effects

A

Too much steroid use: Cushing syndrome:
Acne, GI bleed, ulcers, irritability, increased hunger, increased osteoporosis risk, fat redistribution: buffalo hump, rounded face

Sodium and fluid retention: tachycardia, weight gain
Hyperglycemia
Increased infection risk
