poetic persona
Where a poet writes as if they are someone else
petrarchan sonnet
A sonnet form popularised by Petrarch (14th century Italian poet), consisting of an octave with the rhyme scheme abbaabba and of a sestet with one of several rhyme schemes, such as cdecde or cdcdcd
Shakespearean sonnet
the sonnet form used by Shakespeare, composed of 3 quatrains and a terminal couplet in iambic pentameter with the rhyme pattern ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
Free verse
Free verse is an open form of poetry. It does not use consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any other musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech.
Blank verse
Blank verse is un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter
ottava rima
A stanza of verse consisting of eight lines in iambic pentameter rhyming ABABABCC
elegy
A poem written in elegiac couplets. Now usually refers to lament for someone dead but Latin elegies could be on any subject worthy of serious mediation and were often erotic. This is the way John Donne uses the form in his poetry.
occasional poem
Poetry composed for a particular occasion
refrain
A phrase, line, or group of lines repeated at intervals throughout a song or poem, especially at the end of each stanza
