A

A sonnet form popularised by Petrarch (14th century Italian poet), consisting of an octave with the rhyme scheme abbaabba and of a sestet with one of several rhyme schemes, such as cdecde or cdcdcd

A

A poem written in elegiac couplets. Now usually refers to lament for someone dead but Latin elegies could be on any subject worthy of serious mediation and were often erotic. This is the way John Donne uses the form in his poetry.
