Imagery
figurative language used to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses
Metaphor
a comparison of two objects which have some similarities
conceit
a metaphor where the comparison is between two particularly unlikely objects
simile
a comparison of two objects using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’
personification
giving a non-human object human characteristics, describing it as if it were a person
anthropomorphism
giving animals human characteristics
zoomorphism
giving humans animal characteristic
symbolism
where an object represents an idea
synecdoche
where a whole object is described by referring to a part of it
metonymy
where a whole object is described by referring to something associated with it
pathetic fallacy
a kind of personification where inanimate parts of nature, such as the weather, are given human characteristics to reflect a particular mood
motif
an image or symbol that keeps recurring throughout a text
synaesthesia
describing something by referring to more than one sense at a time ie taste and vision
composite adjective
a describing word made up of two words, joined with a hyphen
semantic field
a group of words with a similar meaning or belonging to a particular topic
