What is age related macular degeneration?
blindness caused by atrophic changes in the macular area
What is an astigmatism?
when the eye has different optical powers in different axes
because the shape is slightly different
What is blepharitis?
inflammation of the eyelids
what is a blow out fracture?
a fracture of the orbital wall due to increased pressure inside the orbit (caused by blunt trauma)
the orbital rim remains intact
what is a cataract?
opacity of the lens of the eye
what is a cotton wool spot?
a small area of retinal infarction causing a pale, fluffy lesion in retina
(soft exudate)
what is episcleritis?
inflammation of the episclera
what is an esotropia?
a convergent squint
the eyes turn inwards
what is an exotropia?
a divergent squint
the eyes turn outwards
what is a flame shaped haemorrhage?
a haemorrhage on the superficial retina
what is glaucoma?
a group of disorders characterised by progressive damage to the optic nerve which manifests as visual field loss
what is guttate?
‘drop like’
what is hard exudate?
leakage of lipid into the retina
what is a hordeolum externa?
a stye-inflammatory focus centered on a lash follicle
what is hypermetropia?
long sightenedness
