Basic Science Flashcards
what is the only part of the eye with lymphatic drainage?
conjunctiva
what is sympathetic ophthalmia?
bilateral, granulomatous uveitis
what are the causes of sypathetic ophthalmia?
unilateral trauma or surgery
what are the 3 main functions of the cerebrospinal fluid?
- mechanical protection
- body homeostasis
- circulation
what cells produce cerebrospinal fluid?
secretory epithelium of the choroid plexus
what is hydrocephalus?
accumulation of CSF in the ventricular system or around the brain
what is papilloedema?
swelling of the optic disc due to increased inctracranial pressure
what are the visual symptoms of papilloedema?
enlarged blind spot
blurring of vision
loss of vision
what is conjunctivitis?
inflammation of the conjunctiva
what is keratitis?
inflammation of the cornea
what is endophthalmitis?
inflammation of the entire globe
what are the 3 main causes of neonatal bacterial conjunctivitis?
staph aureus
neisseria gonorrhoeae
chlamydia trachomatis
how does a neonate acquire neonatal conjunctivitis?
caught the organism as they have come down the birth canal
what are the 3 main causes of bacterial conjunctivitis?
staph aureus
strep pneumoniae
haemophilus influenzae
what is the usual treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis?
topical chloramphenical QDS
what ganglion does herpes zoster remain within?
trigeminal nerve
what causes a dendritic ulcer?
herpetic keratitis (HSV)
why must you never treat herpetic kertatitis with steroids?
can cause corneal melt and perforation
where does orbital cellulitis usually spread from?
the sinuses
compare chloramphenical in terms of what it does to strep, haemophilus and staph?
strep and haemophilus: bacteriocidal
staph: bacteriostatic
how does chloamphenical work?
inhibits peptidyl transferase and so stops bacterial protein being made
what is dacrocystitis?
infection of stagnant tears
what can be used for the treatment of herpetic keratitis?
aciclovir
