What does drape mean?
The supple and flexible characteristics of a fabric - how it hangs or behaves when pleated or folded
What does absorbency mean?
Whether the fabric is able to take in and hold moisture, and consequently drying properties
What does durable mean?
Able to withstand wear, especially as a result of weathering
What does breathable mean?
Can let perspiration out and air in
What does lustrous mean?
A fabulous shine
What does fibre mean?
A fine hairlike structure in staple or filament form
What does biodegradable mean?
Can be broken down naturally through the action of bacteria
What does bonded mean?
Webs of fibre pressed together using adhesives or heat
What is a closed loop process?
A manufacturing process where all waste is reused in the production system (used for Acetate for example)
What is a blended fibre?
Two or more fibres spin together to make a yarn
What is a mixed fabric?
Two or more yarns mixed together in the production of the fabric
What are organic fibres?
Fibres grown using natural fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides to protect the biodiversity of the environment and the workers health
What does recycled mean?
The product has been re-used in some form
What is a target market?
The end-user or consumer group to whom the manufacturer aims to sell
What is a design brief?
A short statement explaining what is going to be designed and made
What is the consumer?
A person who buys, rents or hires products or services
What is a design spec?
An outline that details all the requirements of a product
What are components?
Everything used in the garment apart from the fabric itself
What does handle mean?
How a textile feels when touched such as soft, smooth, warm or cool
What is a product spec?
Contains instructions and information that will be used to make a prototype and calculate the final cost of your product
What does quality assurance mean?
A guarantee given to the customer from the company to assure the quality of the product
What is quality control?
Tests and inspections carried out to ensure that the products meet the specification criteria
What is a prototype?
A full scale model of the product design
What is batch production?
A production where small numbers of identical items are made
What is mass production?
A system where large numbers of items are made on a continuous basis
What is one off production?
The production of a unique product for a specific brief
What does CAD mean?
Computer aided design. Designs are created using a computer
What does CAM mean?
Computer aided manufacture. Where computers are used in the manufacturing process
What does JIT stock control mean?
Just in time. A form of stick control when goods are delivered just in time to use on the production line
What is a tolerance level?
The amount (max and min) of small defects in the product
What are ethical values?
An issue or something that is morally right or morally acceptable
What are environmental issues?
Issues related to the condition of the environment; pollution,waste
What does bespoke mean?
Individual made-to-measure tailoring for men’s suits
What is Tactel?
A high tech polyamide fibre
What does flame-resistant mean?
The ability to resist catching fire
What does stain-resistance mean?
The ability to resist absorption of water or oil based liquids
