Fabric Construction Flashcards
What happens in plain weave fabric?
The warp and weft are aligned so that they form a simple criss-cross pattern. It is strong and hard wearing.
What is plain weave fabric used for?
Fashion // furnishing fabrics
What is a twill weave?
The crossings of weft and warp are offset to give a diagonal pattern on the fabric surface. Twill weave is strong and drapes well
What is twill weave used for?
Jackets // jeans // curtains
What are knitted fabrics?
There are two type of knitted fabrics; warp and weft knitted
What is a weft knitted fabric?
Made by hand or machine, by looping together long lengths of yarn. The yarn runs in rows across the fabric and if a stitch is dropped,it will ladder down the length of the fabric. It is stretchy and comfortable
What can weft knitted fabric be used for?
Socks // t shirts // jumpers
What is warp knitted fabric?
Made by machine and the loops interlock vertically along the length of the fabric. They are slightly stretchy and do not ladder
What is warp knitted fabric used for?
Swimwear // underwear // geotextiles
What are non woven fabrics?
They are made by bonding or felting
What is bonding?
Fabric made from webs of synthetic fibres bonded together with heat or adhesives. They are cheap to produce, but not as strong as other fabrics
What can bonded fabric be used for?
Interlining
What is felting?
Fabric made from animal hair or wool fibres matter together using moisture, heat and pressure. It has no strength, drape or elasticity, but is warm and does not fray. Expensive
What can felt be used for?
Hats // slippers // in handcrafts
What are woven fabrics?
Fabrics made up of a weft and a warp. The side of the fabric where the wefts are, double back to form a non-fraying edge called the selvedge
