Glomular Function Flashcards
Filtration barrier
Fenestrated capillary (glomerular) endothelium Visceral membrane of the glomerular capsule made of podocytes. The interviewing basement membrane composed of the fused basal laminas of the other layers
What are renal nerves?
Fibres that arise from lower thoracic and first lumbar nerves.
Mainly sympathetic fibres that regulate renal blood flow by adjusting the diameter of the renal arterioles
Filtration bar roles
Stops all cells and platelets
Stops large plasma proteins
Stops medium (not small) proteins
Glomerular filtration is
The flow of essentially protein free plasma from the glomerular capillaries into the bowmans capsule
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is
The total amount of filtrate formed per minute by the kidneys and is dependent upon total SA available for filtration, filtration membrane permeability and net filtration pressure
Measuring GFR
C = UV/P
U = the conc (mg/ml) of the substance in the urine V = the flow rate of urine formation (ml/min) P = the plasma concentration of the same substance in the plasma (mg/ml)
Is GFR is high then renal excretion of substances is high. GFR is controlled via 2 main mechanisms..
Nerves
Hormones (renin-angiotensin system)
