Digestive System 1 Flashcards
3 parts of oral cavity
Teeth
Tongue
Salivary glands
4 functions of gastrointestinal tract
- Take in food
- Break down complex molecules in food to simple molecules that can be absorbed as nutrients.
- Absorb water and minerals
- Elimate unusable elements of food and waste
5 parts of the gut
Pharynx Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine
Describe the mucosa and submucosa.
(Tunica) mucosa
• innermost layer
• comes in direct contact with digested food (chyme)
• epithelium provides nutrient barrier
• connective tissue transports nutrients
(Tunica) submucosa
• consists of a dense layer of connective tissue with large blood vessels and nerves which branch into the mucosa and muscularis.
Role of epithelium (gut mucosa)
Lines gut. Provides barrier to entry of unwanted microbes, etc. allows passage of nutrients
What is serosa?
Covers all organs and walls of cavities not open to the outside of the body, so also covers outer surface of gut.
Secretes slippery fluid to allow movement of organs
Consists of connective tissue covered with squamous epithelium
4 parts of peritoneum
Mesentery
Mesocolon
Lesser omentum
Greater omentum
Describe the muscularis externa
(Tunica) muscularis
• consists of inner circular (transverse) layer around the gut.
• longitudinal outer muscular layer around the gut.
These provide contractions that assist food breakdown and movement through the GI tract.
Serosa (visceral peritoneum)
Describe the serosa
Fluid secretion allows movement of organs relative to each other.
Has a thin epithelial layer which produces lubricating serous fluid
Also a connective tissue later provides the blood vessels and nerves for the overlying secretory cells.
