Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
Anytime you see “nephritis” , think___
kidney
Glomerulonephritis is an inflammatory reaction in the__-
What do the antibodies do to the glomerulus?
Glomerulus
-they lodge in the glomerulus which cause scarring and decreased filtering.
What is the main bacteria that causes glomerulonephritis?
Strept
you always assess for a ___ throat.
sore/ strept throat
what are the 2 organs that strept love to attack?
heart and kidneys
Anytime you see a kidney patient who are experiencing malaise and headache, you know they’re retaining what?
toxins
expect your BUN & Creatinine to___. why?
increase; cannot excrete urea or creatinine… these levels will build up in your blood
you’ll see increases sediments and ___ in the urine.
protein; due to membrane increased permeability.
costovertebral angle tenderness pain is AKA__
Flank pain
expect this patient’s BP to___
increase
This patient will most likely have ____ edema
facial
what is erythropoetin?
a hormone secreted by the kidneys that increases the rate of production of red blood cells in response to falling levels of oxygen in the tissues.
(helps your RBCs to mature)
So, if you have a sick kidney, why would you most likely become anemic?
kidney not making erythropoetin= cannot mature your RBCs
If the BUN is increased, what kind of diet will they have?
low protein; because protein turns into urea and makes BUN increase.
sodium in diet?
carbs?
- decrease it since we are hypervolemic
- increase it because carbs give us energy. they keep us from breaking down protein for energy (which we don’t want in this case)
why would we want this patient on bedrest?
bedrest induces diuresis; important because this patient is in a hypervolemic state
what is 1 standard thing we do no matter the disease with kidney people?
I & O, Daily weights
how is fluid replacement determined?
9by their losses, plus 500 CCs (we add the extra 500 to count for the insensible fluid loss… fluid loss that you cannot see like sweat, exhalation)
S/S of renal failure:
- malaise
- headache
- anorexia
- nausea
- vomiting
- decreased u.o
- weight gain
