glomerulonephritis definition?
inflammation of glomeruli in kidneys.
what is the function of the glomeruli?
to remove waste and excess electrolytes and fluid from blood.
signs of glomerulonephritis include ?
pink or cola colored urine. hematuria, foamy urine w/proteinuria. hypertension, edema of face, hands, feet, abdomen. anemia possible.
cause of acute glomerulonephritis?
infection (GABHS, hepatitis, HIV), vasculitis such as pokyarteritis or wegeners granulomatosis.
immune diseases such as lupus, good pastures syndrome, IgA nephropathy.
Complications of glomneph?
kidney failure, high blood pressure, blood electrolyte disorders, nephrotic syndrome
cause of chronic GN?
unclear. genetics and change in immune system.
Diagnostics of GN?
UA and blood analysis - RBC casts, WBC and elevated protein. elevated BUN and CR BUN:CR > 20:1.
CT scan or kidney US can used to evaluate kidney damage.
BIOPST FOR CONFIRMATION OF DIAGNOSIS!
tx acute GN?
self limiting. manages underlying cause and protect. antihypertensives, antimicrobrials, systemic corticosteroids and immune suppressants. worsening cases –> plasmpaheresis. dialysis if severe.
