Globular Proteins Flashcards
What are globular proteins?
-compact, spherical and soluble in water
-form circle shape when folding into tertiary structure
-non polar face in -polar turn on themselves on the outside = soluble in water
Haemoglobin - globular protein
-has quaternary structure
-4 polypeptide chains - 2 alpha, 2 beta
-each chain with prosthetic group
-held together with disulphide bonds
-if changes occur = sickle cell anaemia
Enzymes - globular protein
-in saliva + tears - catalyses breakdown of molecule in bacterial cell wall
-1 chain that folds to form an active site
-critical to active site where substrate binds
Insulin - globular protein
-produced in pancreas - control blood glucose
-2 polypeptide chains
-held together by 3 disulphide bridges
-carry out function by binding to specific receptor molecules
