Increased world interconnectedness including people, culture, ideas and technology.
What role does media play in globalising and integrating various communities?
1). Mass communication =
advances in technology such as; social media, have allowed greater communication, transforming the worlds concept of space and time.
2). Conglomeration =
growth of corporations such as; NewsCor, have led to ownership being in the hands of a few people.
What are the different types of cultures are there?
1) . High.
2) . Folk.
3) . Mass/Popular culture.
What is high culture?
Refers to the elite culture as intellectual achievers.
- can be expressed by paintings, opera, ballet and classical music.
- until now, this used to be un-accessible.
What is folk culture?
Refers to the traditions of a society including; rituals (festivals, folk singing, etc).
- this is regarded as authentic as it reflects everyday life of local communities.
What is popular/mass culture?
Refers to the products of mass media =
- mass media can be seen to integrate high with folk culture by allowing access (books, youtube, etc).
What is meant by homogenisation of culture?
The reduction in cultural diversity as people abandon folk culture in favour of mass produced pop culture.
