globalisation and edu Flashcards
international comparison (globalisation is good)
data collected on all aspects of edu, including international student surveys and student achievement of a range of countries
OECD PISA and TIMSS - collect data about students so international comparison can be made to judge how good the edu system is - countries ranked on LTs which influences gov policies
alexander - comparison leads to PISA panic over state of british edu system and search for miracle cures from countries who top the LTs. by importing policies used in these countries, they aim to improve the edu system
policies introduced due to international comparisons (globalisation is good)
labour 1988-2010 - national literacy and numeracy strategy - 2 hours of literacy every day in primary school - impacts class and gender achievement
coalition 2010-2015 - slimming down the curriculum - focus of edu is essential knowledge of maths, eng and sci and some other subjects - gov refers to this as ‘core knowledge’ - what schools are judged based on for LTs
changes in curriculum (globalisation is good)
curriculum is changing and is less ethnocentric e.g. schools teaching languages like mandarin,
spanish etc.
multicultural education policies through the 1980s - 90s aimed to promote achievement of children from e/m groups by valuing all cultures in the school curriculum, thereby raising minority pupils’ self-esteem and achievement.
PISA is narrow assessment (globalisation is bad)
PISA assessment is narrow way of judging students - only focuses on educational achievement but overlooks students’ wellbeing and citizenship and whether or
not edu system is creating well rounded individuals.
multicultural edu is tokenism (globalisation is bad)
critical race theorists argue MCE is mere tokenism - picks out stereotypical features of minority culture for inclusion in the curriculum but fails to tackle institutional racism.
hasn’t impacted on the heavily ethnocentric curriculum already set by the national curriculum.
international comparison policies criticism (globalisation is bad)
focus on core subjects marginalises more creative subjects at expense of due to priority of LT position rather than interests of children
