Provided an opportunity for Palestine terrorist group ‘black September’ to make a political statement in attempt to achieve their goals
- wanted to put pressure on the Israeli Government to release 234 Palestinians who were held in prison
- took 11 Israeli Olympic team members kept hostage - all 11 died failed rescue

following USSR’s invasion of Afghanistan, USA lead a boycott of the Olympic games
- 66 countries declined to attend the games

In response to USA leading a boycott in 1980, USSR lead a boycott at LA Olympic games
- 14 countries took part in the boycott - mainly communist nations who oppose capitalistic views of USA and over commercialization of the Olympic
