Wrote an essay on the principle of population (1798) At the beginning of modern capitalism when the global population was reaching 1bn. He proposed elective ‘preventive’ checks (contraception, smaller families) and natural ‘positive’ checks (disease, war, famine) to control population
What is the Malthusian Trap?
Progress (such as gains in food production to accommodate a growing population) will be eaten up by population growth so rather than leading to a stable society we will eventually have a population crisis.
