Global issues and deserts Flashcards
Example of scales
local scale-fairy penguins
international-rainforests
Threats to habitats
mining farming settlment introduced species pollutants global warming
What is sustainable development
the development that meets the needs of the current population without preventing the future generations needs. It is basically to live a sustainable life
Where are deserts located
most lie between 30N and 30S
high pressure systems-dry sunny
far inland-beyond range of ocean rainfall
rain shadow areas-protected from rain because of mountains
butte
A butte is a mess that has been worn down by wind blown sand. They are higher than they are wide. They are made from wind erosion and abrasion.
Barchan dune
A cresent shaped dune that has been formed by a strong wind blowing across the desert while depositing sand to form its shape. It is formed due to wind deposition.
Alluvial fan
A large fan shaped pile of sediment found at the base of a canyon. it is formed due to erosion and water.
Climate change is
it is anthropogenic, caused by humans
What is the greenhouse effect
-natural process
level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
it is a worry because the level of carbon dioxide is extremely high and the natural warming of the earth is increasing too fast
Causes of climate change
CO2
methane
nitrous oxide
Negative effects of climate change
Species loss- species have to adapt to new climate patterns causing the surpass of their migrational capabilities. They aren’t able to reach the climatic zones to stay alive fast enough causing species loss.
Coral bleaching- The rising sea temperatures and coral bleaching is effecting the rate of growth. The coral are getting put under thermal stress causing them to release an important algae that provides them with water, food and energy they need to survive.
Loss of islands- rise of sea levels
Positives of climate change
- cold areas may experience more plant growth and mild climates
- next ice age may be prevented
- less need for energy consumption
- fewer death or injuries due to cold weather
individual
individual-support local famers
- use public transport to reduce co2
- use renewable sources of energy
Co2
CO2- It is released through the natural processes through human activities such as deforestation. Hamas have increased atmospheric co2 concentration by more then a third since the industrial revolution
methane
methane- Produced both by natural sources and human activities including the decomposition of water in landfills.
