What do governments do?
Governments govern, regulate and organise society in an attempt to control and better society.
National Governments and their actions:
Reactive - Legislate and invest, to implement international initiatives, laws, targets and agreements
Proactive - Lobby for and contribute to international discussions, votes and decisions
TNCs and their actions:
Reactive - Compensate and adopt new codes of conduct or working practices imposed by legislation
Proactive - Sponsor and support the work of NGOs and international organisations
International organisations and their actions:
Reactive - Respond to global events to offer advice to national governments and publicise the work of NGOs already on the ground
Proactive - Sponsor, facilitate and publicise international issues and agreements and address them
What is the WHO?
The World Health Organisation - They unite countries who work together to combat global health issues
What is the purpose of the UN?
The UN is the United Nations who unite multiple countries who work together on issues such as international relations, resolving conflicts and working on international issues such as poverty.
Define National
National pertains to a single country and involves people from that country only.
Define International
International means the involvement of two or more countries of the world.
What is the jurisdictional gap?
The gap between the increasing need for global governance and the lack of authority with the power to take action.
What is the incentive gap?
The gap between the need for international cooperation and the motivation to undertake it. This is closing as globalisation provides the increasing impetus for countries to cooperative bit there are concerns as certain countries fall behind their influence will also disappear.
What is the participation gap?
This refers to the fact international cooperations remains primarily the affair of governments. It is the ability and choice for nations to communicate
What are some of the UNs goals?
- Maintain world peace and security
- Provide long term humanitarian development
- Eradicate and prevent global hunger
- Protect refugees
- prevent the spread of global disease
What is a global commons?
A global common is a place no government has jurisdiction over
What are the 4 main global commons
- the high seas and deep oceans
- the atmosphere
- the northern and southern polar regions
- outer space
What are some examples of treaties protecting the high seas
