Fair Trade (1) Flashcards
What is the fair trade example for human geography?
The banana trade
Fact about bananas
In 2015 a kg of bananas would have cost 68p but in 2002 a kilo would have been £1.08
What is fairtrade?
Fairtrade is a movement started to insure small farmers get paid a fair price for their bands despite major businesses mass-producing. In the past 40 years, bananas have halved in price which for many small businesses will mean the industry is unsustainable
Benefits of fairtrade?
Smaller businesses can still get reasonable prices for their products despite the same products being available for much less.
Farming will still be sustainable in poorer countries rather than large scale factories ruling the industry
Negatives of fairtrade
Prices for the consumer will rise if they choose to buy fairtrade
Major companies will not benefit and may try to counter the issue
What was the banana republic
The banana republic was when TNCs and large companies were taxed and charged more on imports than smaller scale companies. This was done in order to give the smaller companies a chance at survival. The law doing this was eventually overturned.
