global disparities Flashcards
The Education Monitoring Report - Global disparities
Found that 95% of 3-7 year olds were enrolled in pre-primary or primary school in Belarus (Eastern Europe) compared to just 20% in Ethiopia – Showing a disparity between developed and developing countries.
UN / Gender Parity Index - Global disparities
Gender parity is reached when GPI is between 0.97 and 1.03 – Most Western countries have a GPI of 1.00 showing almost equal numbers of girls and boys enrolled in schools – We are not in the ‘Top Ten’ – Countries that are include China, South Korea, Finland.
UNESCO - Global disparities
Reasons for poorer countries having restricted opportunities for girls:
Constraints within families – In many countries girls are expected to take their roles within the domestic sphere.
Constraints within society – Pressures of early marriages for girls and the threat of sexual harassment and violence outside their own homes – Also cultural and religious beliefs may discourage education for girls.
Policies of school system and educational practices – School systems in all countries are not always empowering to girls – lack of role models, curriculum, teaching methods etc.
Benefits of education – Even when parity is achieved numerically it doesn’t always mean that education directly benefits girls – Also job market is not always equal despite of education.
Filmer - Global disparities
Argues that ethnicity, gender and locality are factors that influences educational opportunities but he states that, globally, it is poverty by far is the most significant factor holding students back e.g. in Somalia the national average of students never attending school is 53% but amongst the “poorest children” in Somalia 89% have never attended school.
